Ryan Blocker from the Alabama Department of Archives and History will be presenting, The Yarbrough Quilt 1921-1959

Mary Strudwick Yarbrough (of Pebble Hill) spent the years between 1921-1959 piecing together an intricate crazy quilt. From the latter half of the 19th century, to around the 1930s, crazy quilts reached their height in popularity. They became a way for women to show off their needlework skills and their wealth, usually featuring scraps of silk and velvet fabric.

However, the Yarbrough quilt stands out from the other quilts of the period. What makes the Yarbrough quilt different? While she sewed, Mary kept a notebook detailing almost every scrap of fabric used in the quilt. We know who wore what piece, when they wore it, and why they wore it! Truly, it’s a quilt made of pieces from her family and community.
