The backbone of American education during the 19th century was the country school. With the vas majority of the population living in rural areas modest wood-framed, brick, sod, or rock schoolhouses dotted the American coutnryside. These humble buildings, usually constructed by parents, were either situated in the center of small villages, nestled in shady groves, perched on lonely prairies, or standing guard along dusty country roads.
